The Innovate Dementia Partners visited the Flanders Dementia Expert Centre in Antwerp

On Wednesday 12 March, the Innovate Dementia Consortium visited the Flanders Dementia Expert Centre in Antwerp. The day started with an introduction by Jurn Verschraegen, director of the Centre in which he explained the key elements of dementia care in Flanders and recent policy developments. He also provided information on the recent public campaigns to reframe the public image of dementia. Jan Steyaert outlined the frame of reference of the Flanders Dementia Expert Centre and the challanges and opportunities in Flanders to make progress with reagerd to supporting independent living and ageing in place. Hugo Goedemé presented the current reality in Flanders regadring this subject.

In order to learn from each other, to see the similarities and especially the differences, the British, Dutch and German colleagues of the Innovate Dementia consortium were invited to present the way independent living for people living with dementia is supported in their region. This was a nice excercise of transnational learning.

To conlcude this day, the Innovate Dementia partners visited De Hazelaar, a residential care setting for people living with dementia. The centre also supports persons with dementia and their caregivers living independently and outside the residential cantre. Sofie Martens of De Hazelaar showed us a very practical example of providing support by ordinary telephone calls.
